Polymer Clay - What is That?

Polymer Clay - What is That?

Before I got into making these earrings, I had no clue what polymer clay was. I was scrolling through Pinterest and saw these gorgeous earrings, clicked on them to see the description and there it was - polymer clay. What?

Then in true, creepy, way-too-smart phone fashion, polymer clay was all I could see on my feed.  There were videos of people literally bending their earrings in half and I was like okay, I need to know more. And hello, how do I make some for myself? I was hooked.

Enough of my fan-girl backstory —

What is polymer clay?

Polymer clay is basically a plastic art medium that is known for its versatility, pliability and simplicity to work with. It is an oven bake modeling material composed of polymers, resins, coloring agents and fillers that sort of melt together when baked to create a strong, yet durable and lightweight plastic. Although the name can be a bit deceiving, it is not a natural clay and actually has a PVC plastic base.

But this plastic quality is what makes these earrings so durable. If you drop them, they won't break. If you throw them in your purse and forget about them for a few weeks (not that I would recommend, but hey - life happens), they should be fine!

And unlike other natural clays, polymer clay also won't weaken or crack or fade over time either. This means your earrings will never lose their vibrance, durability or beauty! That's what I call a good investment.

I'm telling you, the perfect mom earring. Or anyone earring! Enough talking though, try a pair for yourself and see if they live up to the hype.

If you have any more questions about this or about the process with clay in general, please let me know at thelesscollective@gmail.com. I would be happy to help if I can!
